The Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) joined the TechSoup Global Network in July 2015 as the TechSoup Kenya programme partner.
KCDF is a Kenyan development and grant-making organisation, founded and registered in 1997 as a public foundation that supports communities to initiate and drive their development agenda by harnessing and growing their resources as well as securing their basic rights and services. KCDF’s strategic focus is premised on a model that enhances growth and sustainability of communities through capacity development, community philanthropy and local resource mobilisation.
KCDF thus invests significant resources to build, strengthen and sustain the core capacities of these communities by developing thoughtful, long-term collaborations with other actors such as governments, nonprofit organisations, the business sector and individuals to achieve social justice.
KCDF’s work focuses on five thematic areas:
1. Livelihood, Environment and Climate Change Adaptation
2. Education, Youth and Children
3. Partnership and Resource Development
4. Policy, Research and Advocacy
5. Capacity and Organizational Development
KCDF works with poor, marginalized and disadvantaged communities as its primary target group and looks to provide them with support in uplifting themselves from their situation through their own efforts. A secondary target group involves working with organized community groups who are focused on looking to uplift themselves in a sustainable manner through asset building.
KCDF has a national mandate throughout Kenya and makes conscious and deliberate efforts to reach all areas of the country in scaling up development efforts, especially for the underserved. Both grant-making and capacity development work are present in all regions of the country wherever there are credible grassroots organisations that can be used to organise communities around issues that matter to them.
The KCDF model for community development is globally recognized as a best practice - awarded the Dubai International Awards for Best Practices in 2008 for outstanding contribution towards improving the living environment. KCDF also received the Total Eco-Challenge Gala silver award in 2013 for exceptional and sustained achievement in planting trees and conserving forests in Kenya.
